Dining at The Wild Tomato in Fish Creek, WI is a staple experience for anyone traveling to Door County. The hour wait is grueling as you watch other patrons bite into their mouthwatering pizza and smell the wood-fired crust waft through the air, but trust me, it is beyond worth it.
To start off our long-anticipated dinner, my mom and I decided to share the Cherry Walnut salad. Cherries are a door county staple, so it felt like the right choice. The mixed greens were crisp and fresh and dressed just lightly enough with a cherry vinaigrette to pack a lot of flavor and moisten the mixture. On the other hand, the dried cherries were plentiful and really amped up the sweetness. To cut some of the acidity of the cherries and the dressing, the greens were topped beautifully with perfect dollops of smooth goat cheese. And to crisp everything up, they added a sprinkle of walnuts. This salad is something my mom and I literally dream about so there was not question that it had to be a part of our first meal in Door County. The next choice was a difficult one; which pizza was the most tempting? The choices are endless from Margherita, Veggie, and even a Mexican inspired pizza. One aspect of the pizzeria that I find particularly interesting is their "donation creation" pizza. Each month the restaurant puts together different ingredients for a specialty pizza and donates $1 from every pizza sold to a local Door County Charity. I would have loved to do my part in giving back, but since I am a pescatarian and this particular months pizza had chicken on it, I decided to pass. When it came down to make up my mind on the pizza, my mom and I decided to split one called The Fun Guy - a mushroom pizza. It was to die for. When the pie came out the smell of the garlic and herbs was extremely fragrant and the cheese had a perfect amount of bubbling. The edges of the pizza were blackened to perfection which added a nice smokey flavor to each bite. The base was coated with an Italian herbed cream cheese sauce which was creamy, fresh and flavorful. Topped with 5 varieties of sautéed mushrooms, spinach and sweet caramelized onions, every taste was packed with a balance of sweet, salty and umami. While the pizza alone was superb, I do enjoy a little kick to my food so I chose to add a dash of red pepper flakes to turn up the heat and it was a great decision to say the least. Although it was nothing but delicious, we ordered a large and had 1/3 of it left over because the portion sizes are huge! I can guarantee when it comes late-night snacking time I will definitely be reaching for a slice of this. All-in-all Wild Tomato should be a top priority restaurant when it comes to choosing your meals in Door County. Not only is the food out-of-this-world, but the atmosphere is lively and fun. The staff is friendly and out-going and the outdoor seating is a delightful way to spend Door County's chilly evenings.
